Search Engines and Copyright Issues
The Internet is a mess! How can you find anything in here?
Google matches words to websites, it doesn’t answer questions.
Asking "How to fix a flat tire" is better than "How can I fix my car's flat tire?" because you can find an article titled "How to fix a flat tire."
There is no webpage titled "How can I fix my car's flat tire."
You can use quotation marks (")to make things more specific and keep all the words together.
You can use a minus sign (-) to take away nonsense results that are trashing your results.
1. What if you had to cut a pineapple for the first time? How would you find out how? Where would you search? Find a webpage and a video that show how to cut a pineapple. Do you think it's easier to understand the webpage or the video?
2. You need new sneakers for gym class! But now you need to figure out which are the coolest sneakers you can buy that fit the gym sneaker criteria (white, black or grey with a splash of color). Your first search on Google for "Sneakers" turns up 1,000's of pages/ How do you narrow the search results to find out which sneakers would best fit your criteria? Look at the first link on the each of the 5 pages of the Google search that would help you pick a good brand and style of sneaker and rank them on usable from most usable to least usable. Is there a pattern? Why do you think the results become less usable as you go further into the search results? What if you wanted to exclude Adidas from the search results?
SNIPPET: the bolded text within the link that shows your search term. If it's not in the page, the term will be crossed out. Look for pages where the term appears close together, or linked.
Not all webpages are created equal.
